  • Blog #164 – 4 Stages of Learning

When we are learning something new there are 4 stages we must go through.

Stage 1 – Unconscious Incompetence – This stage means that you are completely oblivious to everything. You do not know what you do not know.

Stage 2 – Conscious Incompetence – This stage brings in self awareness. Now you know what the skill or topic is that you want to learn. You also know that you know nothing.

Stage 3 – Conscious Competence – This next stage happens after spending time practicing and studying. You now know the ins and outs but you have to spend time thinking about it.

Stage 4 – Unconscious Competence – This is the last stage of learning. This is complete mastery of a subject. You know how to do something so well that it is second nature. It takes no extra effort and you can “do it while you sleep.” Imagine being Kobe playing basketball.

  • Blog #53 – The Edge of Competence

Growth happens when you are over your head. The moment when you have no other choice but to step up. The pressure is on. The lights are shining in your face. There is no safety net.

More than likely you are going to fail and that is why this zone is beyond our comfort zone. We are taking a huge risk because we are doing something that we have never done before. It may feel like fear that is bubbling up within us but it is excitement, adrenaline and courage.

You are becoming a master of your craft. This is all part of the process. The progression to becoming a master is full of challenges and eventually you are the one who is responsible. These moments of expansion come to test you to see where you are at. If you fail then your moment will come again and you will have to be ready for it. And the moment will keep coming until you take advantage of it.

These are opportunities to shine. These are opportunities to show how far you have come. If you keep taking advantage of these moments then they will get easier and eventually you will be able to move mountains.
