People can be influenced easily by the masses. If someone is unsure of what to do they will often look to see what everyone else is doing and they will do that. This can be good or it can be very bad.
In the book, Influence by Robert Cialdini, it talks about how after a public suicide is highlighted on the front page of the newspaper then the number suicides will go up. These are the people on the edge and then get validated. This is a drastic example of social proof but I think this could be why school shootings are up.
We look to those around us for how we should act and what we should do.
