Understand what people are going through and what they need. Do this by listening to the person or group you want to serve. Listen to their wants and needs. Listen to their weakness and fears. Listen to their skills and talents. Listen to everything about them so you can fully understand where you might be of value. Do not assume what people want or need. Let them talk while you listen.
